This map contains general geographic data from the City University of New York (CUNY) Office of Applied Research, Evaluation, and Data Analytics (OAREDA) database for students enrolled in the Fall semester at any one of the 25 colleges within the CUNY system from 1990 through 2021. The data was filtered to include only students who live in the 5 boroughs of NYC (Manhattan, Staten Island, Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn) or in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Nassau, or Suffolk county in New York or in Bergen, Hudson, Essex, or Union county in New Jersey in order to make mapping simpler. Less than 3% of the CUNY student population in any given year is from outside one of these counties, although the maximum percent of the student population that is from outside the NYC region for any individual college in any given year is 15.4 percent.
The data in this map was further filtered to remove any students for which reasonably accurate longitude and latitude values are not known. Students living in the 5 boroughs of NYC for whom a zip code or more specific neighborhood was not known were placed at a longitude and latitude in the center of a major park in each borough (Central Park for Manhattan, Prospect Park for Brooklyn, The Greenbelt for Staten Island, The Bronx Zoo for the Bronx and Flushing Meadows Corona Park for Queens).
